Accidents Happen.

Are you Protected?

Facing an unexpected medical expense can be daunting, but Accident Medical Expense Coverage ensures you're not alone in handling the financial burden. This supplemental insurance is an excellent complement to any major medical or group major medical plan.

Accident Medical Expense insurance may help lessen your financial strain by reimbursing you for the following types of expenses:

  • Deductibles – High deductibles may leave you responsible for a significant portion of your medical expenses.
  • Coinsurance – Even after meeting your deductibles, you may still be required to pay a portion of the remaining costs, increasing your out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Out of Network Costs – If you use providers out of your insurance network, you are likely to incur additional costs.

Accident Medical Coverage Comparison

Accident Medical Expense vs Scheduled Indemnity

Feature Accident Medical Expense (AME) Scheduled Indemnity
Benefit Type Reimburses actual eligible medical costs (up to the plan limits) you elect. ($2,500, $5,000, $7,500, or $10,000) Pays fixed dollar amounts for specific injuries or services according to a specific schedule noted in the policy, regardless of the actual cost (e.g., $100 per X-ray, $150 per Dr. Visit, $25 per physical therapy session)
How it Works Submit medical bills, and after meeting the deductible you elected during enrollment (if any), receive reimbursement for eligible expenses up to the policy limit. Receive a set payout according to the schedule in the policy, regardless of what the provider charges.
Coordination with Other Plans Works as a secondary payer, helping cover costs not fully paid by your primary plan such as deductibles, coinsurance, or out-of-network fees. Pays you directly, regardless of what other insurance may have covered.
Payout Purpose Helps you cover out-of-pocket costs (up to the policy limit) from actual fees for medical services rendered. Provides a cash benefit that may or may not cover your actual out-of-pocket expenses depending on the benefit schedule and provider costs.

Summary:

Unlike scheduled indemnity plans that pay fixed amounts regardless of your actual expenses, Accident Medical Expense Reimbursement coverage provides real financial protection by reimbursing you for the actual medical costs you incur—up to the benefit limit you select. It’s a smarter, more flexible solution that helps you avoid surprise medical bills and keeps more money in your pocket when accidents happen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this insurance cover?

Accident Medical Expense insurance reimburses up to the Benefit Amount you elect for medical expenses resulting from accidental injuries, including hospital care, diagnostics, prescriptions, emergency transportation, and more—provided the treatment is initiated within 60 days of the accident and incurred within 52 weeks.
Is this major medical insurance?

No. This is NOT MAJOR MEDICAL or comprehensive health insurance. It’s a supplemental health policy that provides benefits only in the event of an accidental injury. It's designed to work alongside your major medical coverage, not replace it. If you're expecting coverage for illness, preventive care, or ongoing health needs, this is not the right plan for you. Instead, it’s ideal for those who want extra protection from out-of-pocket costs tied to accidents.
What types of accidents are covered?

This plan provides 24/7/365 worldwide coverage for accidents, as long as they meet the definitions and are not excluded. Covered incidents must result in an “Accidental Bodily Injury” caused by a sudden, external, and unforeseen event.
Is coverage primary or secondary to other insurance?

This plan pays on an excess basis, meaning it reimburses eligible accident-related medical expenses after any other applicable insurance has paid its portion. If you have health, auto, or other accident coverage, this plan can help cover what’s left over, such as deductibles, co-pays, and out-of-pocket expenses not fully reimbursed by your primary plan. It acts as a secondary layer of protection, stepping in to reduce the financial burden once your other benefits have been applied.
What’s not covered?

Like all insurance, this Accident Medical Insurance includes exclusions that limit what’s covered. It won’t pay for chronic conditions, injuries that happen during professional sports or competitive collegiate sports, or injuries that result from illegal activity, substance use, or certain high-risk occupations (like construction, trucking, or law enforcement). It also excludes injuries from extreme sports like skydiving or rock climbing, and injuries sustained outside the U.S. in non-emergency situations. Additional exclusions apply.  Please read the sample policy that's made available to you during the quote process for the full list of exclusions in your state.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?

No.  Pre-existing conditions, defined as any accidental injury for which you received treatment, diagnosis, or medical advice in the 24 months before your coverage began are specifically excluded. This exclusion is intended to prevent coverage for ongoing or unresolved medical issues. However, if you experience a new and unrelated accident after the policy starts, those expenses may be eligible—even if you’ve had prior claims under other coverage.
